ABOUT US

The Mission:

The Church of Christian Compassion exists to glorify God by leading people to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and introducing them to the family of God.  While being instrumental in helping them to mature in Christ, we are equipping them for ministry and commissioning them for missions throughout the world.

GIVING

Sunday, November 11th, 1960, a new congregation of worshippers was formed after fellowship had taken place to observe Holy Communion and they emerged as “The Church of Worship”. The Church of Worship adopted the “The Doctrine of Christian Assistance” as found in Matthew 25:31-46, as their Disciples Creed. The Church of Christian Compassion became official on March 11th, 1981, with Leonard Smalls as the founder and Pastor. Rev Smalls resigned on December 31, 1986. After being lead for several years by multiple ministers serving as interim pastors, the Lord sent one of His best shepherds and on May 23, 1994, W. Lonnie Herndon was unanimously voted as the Pastor for The Church of Christian Compassion. In 1995, one year after becoming the Pastor, W. Lonnie Herndon led the Church of Christian Compassion in the burning of a 30-year mortgage. In the second year of Pastor Herndon’s pastorate a candlelight service was held, and the Church of Christian Compassion partnered with a local outreach mission that minister to the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of homeless men. In 1999, The Church of Christian Compassion was listed as one of the top three givers of missions by the Philadelphia Baptist Association. In 1999, 2000 and 2001 three years in a row, members of the congregation were awarded the Philadelphia Baptist Association Honors for Evangelism and Hospital visitations. During the summer of 1999 Christian Compassion had its first park revival and saw the birth of the Compassion Street Service Evangelism Ministry. In 2001, God opened doors for Foreign Missions and empowered The Church of Christian Compassion to send sheep from its flock on missionary expeditions. From 2001 to 2023, members have been to South Africa, Ghana, Haiti, Czech Republic, Bolivia, Liberia, Thailand, Lebanon, and Tanzania. In addition, in 2001, The Community of Compassion (CDC) Building was renovated and completed. The CDC sponsors many programs geared to benefit and elevate the community such as: after school reading and tutoring, drone programs, cops and cameras, financial literacy for adults and teens, programs for teens to overcome trauma, along with a host of many other community-based programs. The Church of Christian Compassion moved from the Chapel which was located at 627 S. Felton Street to its new state of the art Worship Edifice located at 6121 Cedar Avenue in September of 2012. In February of 2016, The Church of Christian Compassion opened Children Reared in Biblical Beliefs, affectionately known as The CRIBB which is located across the street from the church at 6136 Cedar Avenue. The CRIBB is a unique place to minister to children while their parents attend church. The CRIBB is also utilized for the Compassion School of Ministry and other ministry events when not being used for the Children. The Church of Christian Compassion continues to grow as it is led, fed, and protected by a Shepherd who knows his sheep.
